00:00:03: Dubai is full of new faces, new clinics and big promises but once in a while you meet someone who isn't building up the hype.
00:00:15: they have been here for long enough that work speaks for them that has been tested and the results are consistent.
00:00:25: Today's guest is Dr Danny, a leading plastic surgeon who actually served patients here for years β more than two centuries!
00:00:36: Building a serious name in this community went on to become a clinic owner with multiple award winnings And this conversation is not a highlighting reel.
00:00:51: It's real.
00:00:52: look at what it takes to last do buy healthcare market, To stay successful and not only become quickly successful.
00:01:01: Dr Danny What you think about your repetition?
00:01:05: What are people saying when you out of the room?
00:01:28: Happy welcome
00:01:29: Thank You.
00:01:30: I would like thank for the invitation.
00:01:35: I'm really happy and pleased with the introduction.
00:01:38: It's a very nice introduction, thank you so much!
00:01:42: You're welcome Dr.
00:01:44: Denny... ...you just told me in the beginning that since year twenty-two thousand basically?
00:01:50: Since
00:01:51: almost
00:01:51: two thousand.
00:01:54: that has to be a little bit putted on the spotlight.
00:01:57: That is something profound, people can learn alot from you and I would like to know before then when or before you came what was your motivation for studying medicine?
00:02:16: Usually, I've been into medical kind of interest since my youth.
00:02:22: My childhood was interested in it and even at the age of ten i remember reading like medical articles or something like that And had this same time artistic hobby to paint.
00:02:37: The only thing Combined medicine and art was plastic surgery.
00:02:42: That's why I went into medicine, surgery and then plastic surgery And this is how it...I came to be here.
00:02:49: Very good.
00:02:50: So the decision of you going to university which University did You take?
00:02:55: At American University of Beirut?
00:02:56: Ah, okay.
00:02:57: And then you were facing struggles to explain everybody in your family that this will be your path.
00:03:03: or was it mostly welcome?
00:03:05: No no my family is all supportive although they know the long path and we are kind of like coming from a self-made family.
00:03:18: so sacrifice from the side of my parents, you know to be able to support me during medical studies.
00:03:25: You have to go into seven years of medicine and then seven years for plastic surgery.
00:03:34: So it's a total of fourteen years.
00:03:35: so all this needs to be supported or not generating any money for family.
00:03:42: My parents thank God they were really supportive Very good.
00:03:50: And this is how it started?
00:03:53: So, what was the decision that you were actually here to Dubai.
00:03:58: when was this taken?
00:03:59: have your head an initial happening What was the background political background in your home country or what was a background for you to come here to do by?
00:04:11: It's
00:04:11: kind of strategic decision.
00:04:13: You know industry.
00:04:14: I had to give credit my mentor.
00:04:17: You know in Lebanon plastic surgery is very kind of famous and uh, Very common.
00:04:23: And then we have lots of plastic surgery.
00:04:25: you don't live on a serious small country.
00:04:28: My mentors mr.. Dr.
00:04:29: Kadura.
00:04:30: he told me Danny my advice to use the go out and exploit Place or establish yourself place outside Lebanon.
00:04:39: We are here already overwhelmed with plastic surgeons and hence decision decisions came to my mind that okay, we have step out of Lebanon.
00:04:49: To choose a country where you can kind of flourish as plastic surgeon and definitely the AE was on top list because this is right place for plastic surgery.
00:05:00: Yes
00:05:01: And twenty five or twenty six years ago Wow!
00:05:04: There must've been a step into market.
00:05:08: That's nearly untouched.
00:05:10: How was it?
00:05:11: Kind Of No.
00:05:12: there were some plastic surgeons at time but Definitely yes, it was not like now.
00:05:16: Of course we were few.
00:05:19: I would say more pleasant to be kind of in a sense that you are not so numbered but It's the golden opportunity for you.
00:05:30: build your reputation.
00:05:31: Yes
00:05:32: Now people will know if somebody is coming.
00:05:35: right now You're going to struggle amongst already whoever really on market in the field, because we are becoming numerous.
00:05:46: However at that time as you said it's very few and then people will know more of us so they'll have space to establish themselves and flourish.
00:05:58: Yes
00:05:59: when you came first clinic like you do now.
00:06:06: You started to work in a hospital, how was it?
00:06:08: How did you find the job?
00:06:10: Was they finding you?
00:06:12: Were you negotiatable with salaries and all of these things that must have been such an journey for you as young Dr Danny something very exciting.
00:06:27: Yeah this is really the exciting part.
00:06:31: I passed through all the phases that anybody can ever pass though before establishing his own career or business.
00:06:40: So, you start as an employee first then as a employee with commission and partner then solo practitioner your own business.
00:06:52: so those phases have been So that's why I understand exactly how each doctor who is going to practice in the field would feel.
00:07:02: As far as his income, or her income related.
00:07:06: so at the beginning i came as an employee to Tawam on a salary basis and of course they opened for me a great opportunity And thank God it was kind of a successful experience and I established lots of connections there.
00:07:28: Then after three, four years to make one step forward.
00:07:31: so i moved to Dubai.
00:07:35: It was my first step into private practice in the UAE At Manchester Clinic with late Dr Nabil Mithri.
00:07:44: He again opened the door for me work on a salary plus a commission or whatever you make.
00:07:54: Again, so more connections and patients coming think that everything was going in the right direction.
00:08:03: Patients are happy better reputation which allow again after another three four years to move into second of third step.
00:08:12: we should go onto partnership with somebody.
00:08:15: I had a partnership and it opened at Dubai Health Care City.
00:08:20: So, like a... It was called Majestic Aesthetic Clinic.
00:08:24: so my partner is business man I'm plastic surgeon.
00:08:27: this how kind of donation set in.
00:08:31: Again same history more success than God And more connections.
00:08:37: people know you better reputation.
00:08:41: After another three or four years You make the ultimate step to go out and open on your own.
00:08:47: And this is why in two thousand and twelve, I opened the Dr Kelly aesthetic clinic.
00:08:52: here we are now
00:08:53: Wow!
00:08:54: And i have been visiting you several times and am so happy to always step over your porch.
00:09:03: it's such a good climate.
00:09:05: It's such an energy.
00:09:07: Your whole team is always so friendly.
00:09:11: I'm interested in finding out when you then had went from step to the next, step-to-the-next level.
00:09:19: How did you realize that?
00:09:21: You have to go farther a step beyond what was the science That you saw
00:09:26: To
00:09:26: make your decision.
00:09:28: okay now i'm going out of their employment i'm Going through this construction i'm gonna do this Partnership and eventually doing my own clinic.
00:09:37: yeah usually you reach At each step, you reach a phase or stage where it's really becoming saturated.
00:09:47: For example in Tawam we reached a phase when my waiting lists were around one year something and the patient was piling up.
00:09:57: It means that something has to be done.
00:10:00: This is right moment for you.
00:10:02: move into private practice
00:10:04: Very smart.
00:10:05: Yeah,
00:10:06: so that's what how it was done.
00:10:08: then from in Manchester when I was on a commission basis.
00:10:13: again we reached stage where I was the negotiating with Dr Navin and God bless his soul which is stage where i'm.
00:10:24: The income generated was really out passes to Commission
00:10:28: yes
00:10:30: And consequently its time for me on my own, but not really all mine at that time because I couldn't afford to be completely of my own.
00:10:39: That's hence the need for an investment from a business gentleman and this is how it happens.
00:10:48: so Dr Nabil consented as you're right to go.
00:10:52: yeah definitely we kept good connection.
00:10:54: although i want to do the SCC At that time, I still had some part-time as Manchester just to be able out of ethical purposes.
00:11:02: To keep on taking care of the people who are still coming there for their first one year or two not to kind of abandon them and I didn't like to move the patient from Manchester into my new clinic was
00:11:14: very loyal.
00:11:17: Out of ethical principles.
00:11:21: So yeah.
00:11:21: so then it came.
00:11:23: we became a partnership thing again after a few years and I thought, yeah.
00:11:30: After all this reputation Dr Kaley et cetera has to be born.
00:11:35: so that's exactly why we moved from Majestic et cetera to Dr Kayley et cetera.
00:11:40: Very good very good.
00:11:42: i'm So proud To have you here.
00:11:44: Thank You so grateful.
00:11:46: And tell me how.
00:11:48: What are the biggest challenges nowadays in the UAE?
00:11:52: Where doctors face, actually clinic owners face.
00:11:56: Actually so much competition out there.
00:11:58: what other biggest assets that you have and what are the big challenges that you face In your career today?
00:12:08: Yeah The most important challenge is that people think that cosmetic is easy.
00:12:14: Okay So okay it's cosmetic.
00:12:16: It's not something.
00:12:19: In fact, it's really hard.
00:12:20: And that why whenever I told you when we specialize in plastic surgery going to seven years of medicine plus seven years off plastic surgery You cannot go do a course two or three weeks and then come an inject people.
00:12:35: It is not fair.
00:12:38: Whenever visit the clinic ,you have right as patient for get best care ever.
00:12:46: And of course the best care cannot come out of two, three weeks course.
00:12:50: Yeah and you face this that...
00:12:51: This is a problem.
00:12:52: what we faced here.
00:12:55: unfortunately our competitors use social media to promote for them.
00:13:01: they are very good at it while At the same time there are recruiting doctors who not specialized in plastic surgery.
00:13:10: There are doctors, like GPs and then who decide to go two or three weeks course in cosmetic.
00:13:18: And they start offering cosmetic services.
00:13:20: This is our main problem To convince people.
00:13:24: because you go on social media You will see for example Dr Kelly Botox is so-and-so.
00:13:32: Then the other botox at half price.
00:13:35: As a patient she might not...you should question why it's just that half price.
00:13:39: You know, there is something behind it.
00:13:41: Right?
00:13:42: How the amount of market that they do kind of is overwhelming.
00:13:46: so a few patients not all of them can go along and then we try to educate patient about tell him no okay you deserve be in right hand you deserve invest more your health pay bit more get best care possible
00:14:05: And that is actually the biggest asset you have here, also to be so good known in a market for your loyalty.
00:14:13: You are
00:14:14: giving twenty-six years of experience
00:14:17: and also to the dignity into your profession towards your patients?
00:14:26: For us... On top of being a human being, he's treated like family member.
00:14:32: It is not an account or somebody where we have to see what the dollar sign?
00:14:38: It isn't that way!
00:14:40: He has a family member and we do prostitution with him.
00:14:42: after we follow them afterwards We make sure if they are happy or she is happy.
00:14:47: So yeah...we followed it at very end.
00:14:50: You want to do whatever you do for your sister, mother or wife.
00:14:55: That's
00:14:56: very good.
00:14:57: So when you see all of these doctors are coming in nowadays and defined Dubai is something that they wanted to move forward with their career.
00:15:10: What you would advise them to do or not?
00:15:13: If maybe advice some young colleagues that are on like twenty years, like twenty-five years... Like you went onto what would have been as an advice for nowadays Dubai success?
00:15:30: Honesty!
00:15:31: This is
00:15:32: a golden path Honestly, to themselves and the patients.
00:15:41: I mean that they should be sure of what they can deliver.
00:15:47: Don't do something you are not sure about doing.
00:15:50: very well.
00:15:51: So be honest with yourself first Okay i could do this procedure or i cannot do it?
00:15:56: This procedure... I am best at doing it.
00:15:59: if you're not good enough let's say a breast augmentation or even a filler, or Botox.
00:16:05: Don't venture into that!
00:16:07: So this is how you'll be honest to yourself... You know exactly what can and cannot give.
00:16:14: And second it will be honest your patient.
00:16:17: if I cannot give you certain service i would tell you sorry yeah but i know XYZ who could do better and we do that.
00:16:28: Yeah, and this was the reputation that you will not lose a patient.
00:16:31: some people can think we'll loose a patient because your because you are honest You're not losing a patient.
00:16:37: The patients would appreciate that I will come back for For something that she knows.
00:16:43: you do it best.
00:16:43: Yes, yes That's so true because especially here in this market I find people who come and knew People trying to get their career moving on.
00:16:55: they are staying So often into paradigm of fake it until you make it And somehow did not never move into making It.
00:17:06: then the sudden you see them disappearing again Because Yeah, it's winding up too tight and then that's why honesty is something very valuable in that.
00:17:19: And at those two levels you should be face yourself of what your capacity or not?
00:17:25: Exactly when it comes to treatments especially also here You mentioned To Be Honest To Your Client That Something Attic.
00:17:35: If You Don't Think It's Something Healthy to do especially in this market,
00:17:40: then it's also... It is not going make her look better.
00:17:43: Exactly!
00:17:44: Sometimes a patient can come for an augmentation.
00:17:47: I will tell her does she looks good on you?
00:17:50: Doesn't matter if she doesn't lose your money or not there isn't any issue.
00:17:54: The issues that tomorrow when she sat at the front of the mirror She would know.
00:17:59: yes he told me the truth.
00:18:00: If we accept some patients sometimes they want something but they cannot because They don't deal with them every day We do everything.
00:18:07: Yes
00:18:07: We know if I do a disinjection, how it's going to look on you.
00:18:12: Right?
00:18:13: If they ask me for something and don't think that will be nice after couple of days... ...I'll have to deny the service!
00:18:20: I would like to tell them sorry let us talk about something else but don't do this.. It is not gonna looks good on You.
00:18:29: I'm not after your money.
00:18:30: After you're connection, i want to establish a honest connection between You and me.
00:18:35: And that is lot of times The mistake people do That they are just after the hunt Of quick dirham.
00:18:43: i am always saying After the quick money They don't understand.
00:18:50: out there People walking around obviously Don't enhanced with certain service appearance, but then they say oh I have been at XYZ and you don't want to have this as a walking business card of your- Exactly.
00:19:08: Of your businesses isn't
00:19:09: it?
00:19:10: So yeah that is something so important to be honest.
00:19:14: But when it comes to um A young student Doing their first step or a young doctor who's doing the first step up road I find that Dubai is not the place where you could practice your skills much because.
00:19:31: The work, did you have here has to be on point and you have to be already routine in what you do.
00:19:39: it's a market and very you can put much more into quality building up your repetition.
00:19:45: but if you come with the thought of i had two get a number of surgeries are having to get the numbers off this and then What is your opinion about that?
00:19:56: That's why it's much better for them to come under the wings of a senior plastic surgeon.
00:20:05: You start establishing new practice, in a premise where you have Senior Plastic Surgeon and you can consult with him when if he are operating they will help or teach.
00:20:20: And now, even in UAE we are starting soon a program of residency program for plastic surgery.
00:20:28: I heard about this on
00:20:29: the
00:20:30: exhibition was there and then
00:20:32: conference?
00:20:32: Yes so definitely that is really keen keeping on with the progress and keen on teaching new doctors, new skills.
00:20:42: And that's why our, you know, plastic social society we established this residency program has definitely helped new doctors to get more skills and more experience.
00:20:56: Also on top of that even if you have finished your just a newly graduate Okay, you go again if want to go into directly private practice.
00:21:04: You don't open on your own technique.
00:21:06: it's not advisable.
00:21:08: It is not advisible... You start working as I said before with somebody who was more senior for few years until really know how things goes.
00:21:17: and people will know about yourself until they are sure of themselves.
00:21:20: You know exactly what can be offered or cannot offer back the same point in honesty And then we can do well or go into your own route.
00:21:31: Yeah, I wanted to ask you some about your clinic and the environment that you work for.
00:21:37: before i want it pick up rain a little bit on their development where UAE is in global market.
00:21:44: at this point Just merge with me my reflection where the UAE always or the Middle East has been years and centuries looking into the West, maybe America.
00:21:58: Or even Europe for getting talented people are even trainings or studies in universities.
00:22:07: Now
00:22:08: I think it's about that they switch around because all of these European doctors, i see so many are coming to the country.
00:22:19: Very valuable people who already successful but not in alignment anymore with political situation and their home country.
00:22:30: it's somehow shifting.
00:22:32: What what idea do you have?
00:22:34: I think, some how a lot of American or even European experts are looking to the Middle East for getting advice and best talent and so on.
00:22:45: How Do You Think This Shift Is Happened?
00:22:47: Usually UAE by itself.
00:22:50: It's kind of attractive because it is economically stable and because its kind an expanding country, brilliant excellent infrastructure.
00:23:03: And in utmost caring leadership which makes everything in UAE attractive for people to come work here.
00:23:15: So it has nothing to do with the nationality, I believe.
00:23:18: It's very individualistic like myself however you look around and see where is this place to be?
00:23:26: And so that why people from abroad want to be here.
00:23:30: but also we have many good local doctors as well... So everybody wants to work here because the country is offering a good infrastructure and safe environment.
00:23:44: And again, this is due thanks for great leadership.
00:23:47: so people are all around you because of that?
00:23:50: That's why we can find even a foreigner doctor and bad you can feel, because it doesn't mean that everybody who's coming from abroad is the best.
00:24:05: He sees an opportunity he wants to try his chances okay?
00:24:09: So basically its not about kind of leaving his own country here because political issues.
00:24:17: I don't think this is just business thing.
00:24:19: we just calculate...he does the math.
00:24:22: where can i be in a place Especially in plastic surgery, I mean people can afford to have the surgery and where the environment is safe.
00:24:33: And you go around...
00:24:35: Yeah?
00:24:36: I know definitely for Germans that they are dealing with political backgrounds.
00:24:42: They would sometimes even say don't mind paying taxes at that height if their environment was safe.
00:24:49: security is something really great that we have here.
00:24:53: And, uh...that's the motivation often for them to come tell me a little bit when-uh..when we look to Saudi on that regard it sometimes.
00:25:03: I've been now since i'm here at twenty two and living constantly year up in several times.
00:25:10: so sorry and um if only it seems it just must be It must have been like that in Dubai, like twenty years ago being in Saudi.
00:25:20: How do you think on a medical aspect?
00:25:23: Yeah, Saudi is the market.
00:25:26: Would advice maybe or not advise?
00:25:30: I cannot help much in this because i've never been to Saudi Arabia.
00:25:34: So that's why... But
00:25:36: from your colleagues, do you have any kind of seeing?
00:25:40: Because being a UAE makes it difficult for me look elsewhere and be honest.
00:25:44: we are really happy here.
00:25:45: That is what I don't think anymore..I'm just trying now My colleagues who practice here and in Saudi, except for a couple of Saudi doctors already are coming from Saudi to... To practice here.
00:26:01: They have their own practice in Saudi And then they're practicing Tex-ul-Aman, Habib For example.
00:26:06: There's Saudi Arabia up there.
00:26:10: Everybody wants to be here.
00:26:13: But me, I cannot answer about other Gulf country because i've never been there.
00:26:18: Okay good!
00:26:19: I was shifting to your clinic.
00:26:22: you have several departments.
00:26:24: tell us what is the concept of your clinic?
00:26:27: The issue that...the whole concept at that time was open.
00:26:32: a clinic or center where everybody all the services lady would need.
00:26:39: it's found And that's why we had the plastic surgery.
00:26:42: We added dermatology, a beauty therapist, obstetric gynecology, cosmetic gynecology and then we add it to oculoplastic, dental, so physiotherapy.
00:26:55: So all what LED can need is found there.
00:26:59: Very good!
00:27:00: Even also dietician nutrition.
00:27:04: Whatever you need You can find.
00:27:07: This is the whole concept.
00:27:09: I was so impressed that you even have your own operation hall, isn't it?
00:27:15: It's a small procedure room because we only do few things... Small things under low kinesthesia The procedure room exactly Because sometimes there are some things You don't need hospital for.
00:27:27: Okay but be careful We're doing something very small.
00:27:31: Something doesn't warrant any hospitalization.
00:27:36: Okay.
00:27:37: so when there is something bigger you then send on go with the people, your clients?
00:27:42: We will
00:27:42: take them here.
00:27:43: we are connected to MRS Hospital and sometimes to Clemenceau Medical Center as well.
00:27:50: And to Quotaina Hospital multiple hospitals in which they're connected.
00:27:55: Dr Danny one question of being an successful entrepreneur here in Dubai, not only a surgeon but I see you also as an very successful entrepreneur.
00:28:06: You mentioned earlier that some of these doctors they know how to do marketing ,but i know it's very important an important thing for somebody who comes here, wants to establish their career.
00:28:27: On what stage and on what importance do you rate marketing?
00:28:35: What is your golden rule to be successful in that?
00:28:38: For a newcomer it's really important.
00:28:43: I cannot overemphasize this.
00:28:49: Danny Kaley, it's not who has been here for twenty six years and then he is depending on the word of mouth Yeah.
00:28:55: So that's why you have a spectrum Where?
00:28:59: You know they had to have like a curve where there are new newcomer as kind of an top-of-the-curve of needing marketing agencies because
00:29:09: You can also take some help.
00:29:11: yeah
00:29:12: lots up ahead.
00:29:13: further for the newcomers It's a must is a must until maybe few years more when people know him.
00:29:19: but for the first two to three years I think, For new comer A marketing agency it's really a must.
00:29:27: Yeah!
00:29:27: For us senior ones okay this was my daily discussion with My daughter who she just graduated from Paris.
00:29:36: She has a master in management of luxurious brands.
00:29:41: So we always discuss this.
00:29:42: I tell her that This...for me It may be I have a kind of question mark about how marketing help, because you know people know me the angel accounts.
00:29:53: Because she was referred by let's say one of her friend and her friend is coming from another friend.
00:29:59: so yeah for those senior who've been like for more than twenty years in the country okay marketing can just kind of cream on the cake.
00:30:07: but for the newcomers definitely it must.
00:30:11: Yeah that this
00:30:13: strategy Doctor cannot know it.
00:30:17: And even those whom I told you about, that they knew about marketing is not to talk them himself.
00:30:23: there's a business owner.
00:30:25: usually most of the centers are really kind of recruit doctors who take like small courses in cosmetic.
00:30:36: They have strong...to compensate for that..they have a really strong marketing team.
00:30:45: Yeah, I witnessed this too.
00:30:47: That is more and more in when there are recruitment talks or interviews that has always a question who's making your marketing for the doctor?
00:30:58: And they... When you come from Germany, For example, They're just likeβ¦I don't know!
00:31:04: Maybe Miss Thomas.
00:31:06: And they don't even get used to it, but that's why I'm lining this out.
00:31:11: It is so important.
00:31:12: and then To get this advice from you into the game Is actually be on a honest side Still doing marketing But on an honest side because That also has big ability to fire back.
00:31:27: If you promise something...
00:31:29: It will fireback on both?
00:31:31: The daughter and the marketing agency.
00:31:33: So definitely, I know you very well.
00:31:36: You will not venture promote or market for anybody whom we don't believe in
00:31:42: exactly
00:31:43: and this is the caliber of marketing agencies that we need even from new doctor.
00:31:48: Of course he would study his case or a new center And tell him okay?
00:31:53: You can market for this because you can do it good to come market for us.
