Build a Business That Runs Without You
Show notes
In this episode, Dr. Angela Thomas shares five fundamental shifts that can help turn a founder-dependent company into a scalable business.
You’ll learn:
Why the 30-day absence test reveals how dependent your company really is on you. The difference between building a business and building yourself a job. Why entrepreneurs need to stop acting as the engine and become the architect of the business. How documentation and repeatable processes help transfer knowledge from the founder into the organization. Why repeated questions from employees can indicate a system problem, not a people problem. Why strong leadership is built around clarity rather than constant pressure or supervision. How delegation creates capacity instead of taking away control. Why company culture becomes particularly important when the founder is no longer in the room. Why the speed of business in the Middle East needs to be supported by strong systems: speed without systems creates chaos. A simple two-column exercise to identify what you can automate, delegate or turn into a repeatable process. Why the ultimate goal of entrepreneurship should be increasing impact while reducing the company's dependency on your personal time.
Key question from the episode: What can I build today that will save me time tomorrow?

00:00:00: If you disappear today for thirty days, what would happen in your business?
00:00:06: Truth is they haven't built a business.
00:00:10: They have actually build it a job!
00:00:12: Stop being the engine of your business.
00:00:16: become an architect instead.
00:00:19: What can I do?
00:00:20: that will save me time tomorrow.
00:00:32: Very welcome here for another episode of Skillionaire, the podcast where stories stick and strategy scale.
00:00:41: And today's podcast.
00:00:42: I have brought you a very inside Episode.
00:00:45: one of my single episodes is always about helping use or putting you in your business growth.
00:00:51: So sometimes i'm taking that time like i am doing this with My skillionaire class In my mentoring to actually advocate You About what?
00:01:02: business, grow to maybe only inspire you but leading to the next step.
00:01:07: So let me start with one simple question if you disappear today for thirty days what would happen in your business?
00:01:19: What will happened in your company ?
00:01:21: Would your companies still grow ,still even run .Would your clients receive this same level of service?
00:01:29: Or would your team exactly do what?
00:01:33: Yeah.
00:01:34: Would everything maybe come even to a stop, for example many entrepreneurs.
00:01:40: they have exactly this dilemma where they have never been on vacation Where it cannot balance their entrepreneurship They have actually not done anything for themselves and I think This is such an old pattern of misconception and entrepreneurship.
00:01:58: I'm not saying that you should take all lavish, expensive vacations every month but i'm saying you should actually build on the right concept of your business.
00:02:13: so it's not only nurtured by your talent ,by time, effort or knowledge But You Should Nurture a Business Model And Build On It.
00:02:23: that also can sometimes stay alone, not in the very beginning.
00:02:29: So would everything come actually to a stop for many entrepreneurs?
00:02:33: That's actually a difficult question because the truth is they haven't built a business there have actually build it at job and that's big difference.
00:02:46: And today I wanted to talk about what i really mean without depending on you and you being there every single day because in my expertise this is where true scaling is actually beginning.
00:03:04: The first shift being the engine of your business, become the architect instead.
00:03:13: An architect doesn't build every wall by himself.
00:03:16: an architect designs this system that you wanted to delegate the building.
00:03:22: many entrepreneurs wake up every morning asking what do I have today?
00:03:29: Successful Business owners ask different questions.
00:03:33: they asked What can i build today?
00:03:35: That will save me time tomorrow.
00:03:38: That's one of the questions that changes actually everything.
00:03:42: The second, that is actually implemented.
00:03:45: it shifts your whole documentation off success if you team consistently ask you this same question You don't have a people problem.
00:03:59: Every repeated task should become a documented process.
00:04:04: Whenever we do something new, I tell my employees make that process and document it so we learn from it And We can take this on for the next time.
00:04:14: to save time How do we onboard, for example our clients?
00:04:19: It's such an important thing and you do this all the time.
00:04:22: There needs to be a structure.
00:04:24: how Do We respond to inquiries is also such An important thing To see what Is actually working in your sales?
00:04:32: How do We handle complaints?
00:04:34: it is Important not to get A false repetition And a bad reputation In The market!
00:04:45: answer like that should exist somewhere else than in your head because you're business cannot grow at all faster than your abilities of transferring the knowledge.
00:04:58: If you feel and know, realize that things are not moving forward because YOU are the bottleneck then it's time for you to change this and make processes out of these situations!
00:05:11: Sometimes when I'm preparing my whole week i am NOT being in the operational, but I'm thinking through who i can task with what task to actually fulfill something.
00:05:23: To also create a whole good team workflow.
00:05:27: So one of the questions that this one has, One of the dependency in the task fulfillment.
00:05:34: my one employee Has to be dependent on the tasks.
00:05:37: That next one has to do so.
00:05:39: This is kind work you should also Do.
00:05:42: The third shift Is actually leadership.
00:05:45: Many entrepreneurs believe They need just better employees, but this is totally not the truth.
00:05:52: I don't always agree with that.
00:05:54: most teams Don't need more motivation they need More clarity and people perform better if they have actually an exceptional clear leadership.
00:06:08: One of my employees Actually has worked under a very pressure culture in his previous companies And pressure toward him results in our daily life always to a kind of tension where he brings up his guard and thinks, He has to defend himself.
00:06:29: And it takes some good leadership To understand this burden Of this person This pattern of this person.
00:06:36: It takes your leadership to unfold the skills that this person has underneath this old pattern of Old leadership of pressure.
00:06:47: And if you wanted to implement this kind of culture in your business, that is also a very big responsibility underwear, then it's only burning money.
00:07:09: So that is a big shifting where you also have to get your recruitment really strong on time effective way and then unleash the talent of When success is measurable, leadership isn't about controlling the people.
00:07:29: It's about creating an environment where people can actually succeed without constantly being supervisioned.
00:07:38: and then we have the fourth shift...is learning to let go?
00:07:43: yes I know every Every one has that, every founder of the business have.
00:07:50: Especially when they develop a product especially when there are sometimes delivery of products and that is often the hardest part because your business feels personally to you and you've cared deeply about it, deeply about your clients.
00:08:08: You want everything be perfect Of course!
00:08:11: But here's what we need.
00:08:15: Often no company can scale if every decision has to go through one single person.
00:08:22: And that's why you have to build up competencies in your team, delegate and hold them responsible for the outcome.
00:08:30: Delegating is not losing control.
00:08:33: Delegate is actually creating capacity and time For You!
00:08:38: and Capacity allows Your clothes & The clothes of the whole Company.
00:08:43: So the fifth is actually building a culture that people wanted to be with you, that a culture.
00:08:53: what people do when you are not in their room.
00:08:57: The culture of where they're actually intaker would want you taught them?
00:09:04: When you were there.
00:09:04: it's not about your mission statement on the wall It's not your company's values written any kind of handbook, it's not the behavior your team repeats every single day.
00:09:19: When you're culture is strong You don't have to manage every detail.
00:09:25: people make better decisions because they understand a bigger vision.
00:09:31: Let me connect this to the Middle East, one of the reasons businesses grow here so quickly.
00:09:39: Here has everything speed.
00:09:41: markets move so quickly and fast.
00:09:44: opportunities appear partnerships happen quickly, but speed without a system creates only the chaos.
00:09:53: And that's why entrepreneurs who scale successfully don't just move fast.
00:09:58: they build businesses that can move fast constantly and That's a huge difference.
00:10:06: So here is a simple exercise I'd like you to do today.
00:10:11: Do it right now.
00:10:13: Press pause and take a piece of paper, draw two columns on the left side.
00:10:18: write down everything you personally do every week.
00:10:22: On the right side You ask yourself one question Can this be automated?
00:10:29: can this be delegated?
00:10:30: ?can This become maybe a system?
00:10:33: And if they answer is yes start building it today.
00:10:38: Start building your system.
00:10:40: One process at a time improvement at a time because great companies never build overnight.
00:10:49: They're building through thousands of small improvements repeated constantly.
00:10:56: I'll leave you with the last final thought, The goal of entrepreneurship isn't become busier every day ever year.
00:11:05: it's the goal to create an impact while becoming less dependent on your time.
00:11:12: That's what freedom is actually looking like and that's what scaling also looks like, And thats why you probably started to become a entrepreneur in first place!
00:11:31: So I hope i could inspire you today a little bit, maybe also challenging your perspective.
00:11:39: A little bit if You feel you wanted to share this with somebody?
00:11:43: I'm highly appreciating.
00:11:45: Send this video To those persons who say it's only done by me or have never time Or work twelve hours because they might get another Perspective and you bring them not Only something new to know but remind them how valuable time is.
00:12:03: So they need to hear this, just imagine how grateful they are when they can actually keep building ,keep improving and remember you sending them this video.
00:12:15: so don't just build a business that dependent on you!
00:12:19: Build the business that continues growing because of the system your vision that you have created.
00:12:30: So I'm looking forward for your comment and if you wanted to book a Skillionaire strategy session, You'll find all details of this in the show notes and in the info box!
00:12:42: I say goodbye until next podcast.
